The Holiday Tutorial is designed for new to intermediate Maya users. In this project you will learn how to create your own complete digital illustration from start to finish. We begin by modeling our main character, a snow yeti, by using images planes for reference and then we'll model all the basic shapes using nurbs primitives. Once we have the shape and size right, we'll convert into polygons to add detail. We will also cover converting back and forth to sub-d as well to help with shaping details. After our character is complete we switch to modeling the set using a lot of the same techniques.

You will then begin the texturing process for both. You will learn how to lay out a flat effective UV map for painting in Photoshop as well as learn how to use tools such as UV's cut and UV's sew and move. The painting of our illustration is done in Photoshop where you will learn how to build up layers of color to create cool looking skin for our yeti as well as ice for our cave. After the texturing its time to move into some Maya fur work to give our yeti some white fur to keep him warm. You will learn how to add fur to your model as well as manipulate it so it all goes in one direction. You will also play with size, length and "baldness". Finally, its time for lighting work. You will learn how to create lights, adjust their settings and add cameras to get your final composition.

Choosing The Right Path For Your Project
For the last few years, there has been a popular "Buzz Word" going around the FX industry. FBX, or FilmBox file format, is a common 3d geometry format used by most of the popular 3D animation and Compositing software applications. With the advent of proper 3d tools inside of Fusion, artist's have the ability to import modeled geometry and camera data from there 3D animation programs. This allows for congruent camera animations and projection mapping inside of fusion while allowing for the ability of additional compositing and color correction at this level of the production pipeline. Secondary Animations
Rarely do you see a tree that does not have leaves falling from it at some point. We show you how to add falling leaves in your 3D scene as well as several different methods for creating cloud movement. When it comes for the final look, we let you decide what is best for you by giving you access to a variety of methods used in digital compositing. We know that each job is different, and there is not always a right or wrong way to do the job. With the proper instruction, you will be able to decide for yourself.

Additional Information
3D Matte Painting Extractions are a now common process in the visual effects industry. The technique for matte paintings and 3d extraction have been around for years, but normally found in a 3d animation package like Maya, XSI, or Cinema 4D. Since version 5.0 of Eyeon's Fusion compositing application, 3d tools have been available to generate 3d style composites. With the latest release of Fusion, additional tools have been introduced in order to assist in the workflow of using 3d projections utilities such as the "Projector" and "Camera". As usual, we show several different methods for achieving your goals so that you can apply your learning to your own personal projects. We included a 2k matte painting with a solid plate and in 20 different layers to assist you with the time it takes to prepare your materials for the composites. There is no doubt about it, we created the perfect environment and digital assets to get you into this project no matter what path you decide. We include a project file with the new PAW projection tool in 5.3, but heavily rely on the traditional tools inside of Fusion with the other variations.

Intro to Subsurface Scattering

Translucency is a characteristic of many materials, both natural and man made. From leaves and murky water to wax, sandblasted glass or skin, many objects that may be opaque will still absorb light into the surface. Subsurface Scattering is a rendering technique that allows for the simulation of translucency in Mental Ray. This lecture introduces the misss Fast Simple material and gives an in-depth demonstration of how to set-up and work with the shader.

Polygon Modeling with Kevin Hudson | 2,5 G | RS

In this DVD, Kevin Hudson presents an overview of various issues and techniques related to modeling cars for a polygon/sub-d surface pipeline.

Referencing two different cars models, Kevin demonstrates his methods for approaching each model's construction. He covers using orthographics and scale models, roughing in the car body, refining individual panels, creating surface details, building complex wheel rims and preparing the model for texturing. Kevin concludes by examining the application of his techniques to different car models.

High Resolution 3D vehicle illustration

Starting with a photographic backplate and 3D model, Brendan McCaffrey presents an in-depth look at an automotive illustration project step-by-step from wire- frame to finished product, using Maya, Mental Ray and Photoshop�. In phase one, Brendan covers the initial brief, 3D setup and rendering. He then moves on to the view setup, matching the camera, and preparing the model and textures as they relate to high resolution work: shaders for paint, glass, metal and rubber.

Brendan proceeds with the environment and lighting setup and on to the final renders of all the required layers and passes. In phase two, he assembles and corrects the render layers and passes in Photoshop�. Brendan then moves on to blending the image into a cohesive whole using non-destructive color correction and adjustment. Finally, he demonstrates how to apply effects and finishing touches. This DVD comes with the project's Photoshop files.
